How players join with the address
| Edition | Server address field | Port field |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition (PC) | yourname.mc.minecrafthosting.cc | Leave empty, there is none |
| Bedrock Edition on a Crossplay plan | yourname.mc.minecrafthosting.cc | The Bedrock port shown in your panel, its own number for every server |
Bedrock asks for the address and the port in two separate fields and fills in 19132 when the port is left empty. Java reads everything it needs from the name. Setting up both editions in one world is explained on Java and Bedrock crossplay.
Java players can leave the port out because every connection first arrives at our own address router. Minecraft sends the name the player typed as part of the connection, the router reads it and forwards the player to the right machine and port. That is also why the address of the machine never appears anywhere: players only ever see the name. The steps players follow on each device are in how to join a Minecraft server, and how to find a Minecraft server IP covers every other kind of address.
Choosing your name when you order
On the order page there is a Server address field under the server name. Type the name you want and the page tells you straight away whether it is still free. Leave it empty and your server gets an address automatically, and you can add names of your own later.
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Length | 3 to 24 characters |
| Characters | Lowercase letters a to z, digits and hyphens |
| Hyphens | Not at the start or at the end of the name |
| Taken names | A name another server already uses cannot be picked twice |
| Reserved names | 27 names are kept for our own use, such as play, panel, shop, store, support and www |
| Word filter | Names that we cannot put on a public address are refused |
Two domains to choose from
Next to the name you pick the domain behind it: mc.minecrafthosting.cc, which is the default on Lodehost, or mc.astroworldmc.com, which we share with our partner host. Both work exactly the same way and reach the same kind of server. Pick the one that reads best with your name.
Add three more names from the panel
Open Settings on your server
The address card shows the address you have now and how many extra names you can still add.
Type the extra name
The same rules apply as at checkout. The extra name uses the same domain as your main address.
Add it
The new name works within seconds. There is no DNS record to create and nothing to wait for, because every customer address already sits under one wildcard that points at the router. Adding a name only adds a line to its routing table.
Share whichever name you like
All names reach the same server, so an old name in a Discord message keeps working next to the new one.
An address is never taken away
The panel only adds names. An address that exists is never renamed or removed, not on request and not while you add another, because it is in Discord messages, on server lists and in your order email. Changing your plan does not change it either.
Several servers behind one address
Running a lobby, a survival world and a creative world? Between 2 and 6 of your own servers can sit behind one address, with one of them as the lobby. Players join the address, land in the lobby and move to another server with a command in chat, without disconnecting.
A small proxy is installed next to the lobby on the same machine, and the servers behind it get a shared secret in the same step, so none of them is ever reachable without it. Each server also keeps its own address, and that address still takes players straight to that server. The setup in detail is in one address, several servers.
Why a name is better than an IP address
- People remember it. A name that matches your server is easy to share by voice or on a poster; a string of numbers and a port is not.
- It survives changes. When your server moves to another machine or you change plan, the name stays the same and players do not have to update their server list.
- It keeps the machine private. The address of the machine behind your server never shows up in a client, a server list or a screenshot.
- It goes everywhere. The same name works on server lists, in your Discord, on your free server website and in the MOTD.
When players cannot connect at all, the address is rarely the cause. Can't connect to a Minecraft server goes through the common errors one by one.
