When Fabric is the right loader
- You want a faster vanilla world. Fabric with server performance mods keeps the game as it is and cuts the time a tick takes. Server performance mods for Fabric lists the ones with a stable build.
- You play a modern, lighter modpack. Many packs on Modrinth are Fabric packs.
- You want a new Minecraft release soon. Fabric mods are often among the first to update.
- Not when you want plugins. Fabric loads mods, not Bukkit or Paper plugins. For those, Paper is the loader.
Choosing between the three mod loaders is mostly choosing the mods you want, because a mod is built for one of them. Fabric vs Forge vs NeoForge goes through it, and the Forge and NeoForge pages cover the other two.
How the Mods tab installs a Fabric mod
Set an exact Minecraft version
A mod build is made for one release. On Latest the tab asks you to choose an exact version first, in Settings.
Search
Results come from Modrinth, sorted by downloads, and only show mods that run on a server and have a Fabric build for your version.
Pick the mod version
The list holds the latest stable releases for Fabric on your Minecraft version. Betas and alphas are left out.
Install, then restart
Required dependencies come along in the same install: Chunky and Clumps, for example, bring Fabric API with them. Every file is checked against its SHA-512 before it is placed in the mods folder.
| Limit | Why |
|---|---|
| Only approved Modrinth projects that run on a server | A client only mod does nothing on a server and can stop it from starting |
| Up to 20 dependencies, 5 levels deep | A larger tree is refused instead of half installed |
| 128 MB per file | A bigger file is refused before it reaches your server |
| No install from a link | Files only come from Modrinth's own file servers |
Your own mod or a mod that is not on Modrinth goes in through the file manager.
Fabric modpacks in one click
A whole pack goes on from the same tab: search Modrinth, CurseForge or Feed The Beast, pick the pack version your players have in their launcher, and install. The panel reads the pack, skips client only mods, and renames your current mods folder with a date instead of deleting it. One click modpack installs explains each source.
Players need the same pack version on their side. Joining a modded Minecraft server is the page to send them.
Which size a Fabric server needs
| Your Fabric server | Players | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric with performance mods, or a light modpack | 5 to 10 | 8 GB, from €10.95 |
| A larger modpack with a few hundred mods | 5 to 10 | 12 GB |
| A heavy pack or several worlds | 10 or more | 24 GB |
Per month on a 24 month term, on the Standard line. Most performance mods save processor time rather than memory, so they pair well with the faster core of the Performance line.
Switching to Fabric
On the Settings tab, choose Fabric. The panel stops the server, takes a backup, waits until it has finished and converts. Your world stays, and the Java version follows the Minecraft version you run, from Java 8 for old releases to Java 25 for 26.1 and newer.
Coming from Paper
Plugins stay in the plugins folder but are not loaded on Fabric, so claims, ranks and an economy from plugins stop until you switch back. Blocks from mods that you later remove show up as missing in the world. Changing version and server type has the full list.
